Spores germinate into gametophytes, the zygote develops into a sporophyte that releases spores, and then spores produce new gametophytes. The two phases are morphologically distinct. In each cycle, a haploid gametophyte, each of whose cells contains a fixed number of unpaired chromosomes, alternates with a diploid sporophyte, whose cell contain two sets of paired chromosomes.

Bryophytes • plants without well developed vascular systems. A haploid gametophyte cell contains a fixed number of unpaired chromosomes. It gives rise to diploid sporophyte, which, however, contains twice the number of paired chromosomes. The antheridia (male) and archegonia (female).
